The Pencester Road bus priority scheme is bring delivered as part of Kent’s Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP). This is designed to improve West to East bus connections within Dover, including providing a reliable, fast and central route for buses Dover Fastrack and Port bound services through Dover Town Centre. This will also include improvements to existing bus stops and will improve access to local bus routes to encourage greater use of public transport.
The scheme will include the following changes:
- Realign the kerbs and pavements at the Worthington Street and Biggin Street junction. This will allow buses to cross into Pencester Road.
- Install traffic lights at the Worthington Street, Biggin Street and Pencester Road junction. The existing controlled crossing on Pencester Road will stay.
- Realign kerbs and pavements at the southern end of Pencester Road. This will allow a two-way vehicle passage. We will reduce the existing pavement and install a central island to separate the lanes.
- Install a contraflow bus and cycle lane along the western side of Pencester Road, between Biggin Street and Maison Dieu Road. All existing parking will be removed from this side of the road.
- Reduce the existing pavement width. This will allow for an uninterrupted bus lane between the parking area entrance behind the shops and the front of Dover Technical College.
- Install traffic lights at the Pencester Road and Maison Dieu junction. We will also realign the kerbs and footpaths on both sides of Pencester Road to allow buses to pass through. The existing controlled pedestrian crossing on A256 Maison Dieu Road will stay.
- Install a pedestrian crossing on Pencester Road.
- Keep the existing southbound bus stops and bus stands. We will put in place two bus stops on the western side of Pencester Road.
Works Programme:
